It’s that season again. Deepest darkest winter is upon us, the buzz of Christmas has come and gone, leaving us with heavier waistlines and lighter bank balances, and everyone’s just lost a bit of mojo.
Time for a holiday.
There’s a lot to be said for throwing in the towel for a couple of weeks merely days or weeks after Christmas. Everyone else is back at work (and let’s face it, a bit miserable), and you’re on the beach with a cocktail in hand, the smell of sun cream fresh in your nostrils.
As someone who’s spent more than a decade working in the travel industry, I’d like to share with you a few of my favourite places to catch some winter rays.
I love the chilled out vibe of the Caribbean, and Barbados has delivered time after time. Yes, you can spend a fortune on resort hotels but I would scrap that in favour of finding a cheap apartment rental on St Lawrence’s Gap and eating (and drinking) locally. You’ll find white sands, turquoise waters and some fabulous water sports to get stuck into.
Another island known for its picture-perfect beaches, Mauritius is more of a slog to get to from the UK but has such a friendly vibe that it’s worth travelling for. Make sure you take a look around the island, with a stop at the Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam botanical gardens (especially the giant lilies) and the lively town of Port Louis.
The British winter is an ideal time to visit the Philippines, and my favourite island by far is Palawan. Spend time exploring the islands off the coast of Port Barton, before heading north to El Nido. You simply must do the 4-day Tao sailing adventure to Coron (or in reverse) too.
